FenCon 2012 Writers Workshop

featuring Karl Schroeder

The 2012 FenCon Writers Workshop is full!

FenCon and the Dallas Future Society are happy to announce that our eighth annual Writers Workshop will be hosted by Karl Schroeder. We are thrilled to welcome him as our Special Guest instructor for 2012.

The Workshop will be an intense series of sessions beginning on Thursday, September 20th, held in conjunction with FenCon IX. It will be personally supervised by professional author and editor Karl Schroeder.

The focus of this year's Writers Workshop will be on outlining, scene transitions, sequence, and plot rhythm in novels. Participants will submit a chapter or two (or even just an outline) which Karl Schroeder will present to the group for analysis on its structure and rhythm using a variety of methods to compare with archetypal literary patterns. Unlike seminars which emphasize critiques, Karl will help the group to answer a question every writer must ask: What happens next?

Additional details:

  • The Writers Workshop application period ended September 4, 2012.
  • The workshop is limited to 20 participants.
  • Each participant must be a paid attending member of FenCon. Either a full Regular Membership or Friend of the Fen Membership meets this requirement. See the membership page for details
  • There is a $40 fee for participating in the Workshop in addition to the FenCon membership fee.
  • Writer's Workshop sessions begin on the evening of Thursday, September 20, 2012.

  • Each participant must submit their own original work of fiction via an electronic manuscript consisting of the first chapter or two (or just an outline) of their novel or short story. No shared-worlds or "fanfic" is allowed. Deadline for submission will be determined at a later date.
  • Each participant will have access to a private online forum where they can ask questions, interact with each other prior to the workshop, and post their submissions and critiques.
  • The submission deadline, manuscript format, workshop schedule and other details will be provided later in a private message.

If you have any questions or comments about this workshop, e-mail workshop@fencon.org.
