All monies raised by our charity auction and the limited-edition Darrell K. Sweet cover print,

About the American Diabetes Association More than 20 million Americans have diabetes, a disease in which the body does not produce or properly use insulin, a hormone that is needed to convert sugar, starches and other food into the energy needed for daily life. The cause of diabetes is a mystery, although both genetics and environmental factors appear to play significant roles. Risk factors for type 2 diabetes, the most prevalent form of the disease, include obesity, activity level, and family history. Diabetes is the fifth-leading cause of death in the United States. More people will die from diabetes-related complications than from breast cancer and AIDS combined. The American Diabetes Association is the nation's leading nonprofit health organization providing diabetes research, information and advocacy. Founded in 1940, the American Diabetes Association conducts programs in all 50 states and the District of Columbia, reaching hundreds of communities. The mission of the organization is to prevent and cure diabetes and to improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes. To fulfill this mission, the American Diabetes Association funds research, publishes scientific findings, provides information and education to people with diabetes, their families, health care professionals and the public, and advocates for scientific research and for the rights of people with diabetes. RESEARCH Each year, the ADA invests millions of dollars in diabetes research throughout the nation, resulting in advances in diabetes treatment and prevention. The ADA is the largest non-government funder of both type 1 and type 2 diabetes research. EDUCATION/INFORMATION The Association reaches millions of people annually through education activities and public awareness efforts, such as American Diabetes Alert; Diabetes Month (Nov.); Wizdom Youth Zone for kids; the Association’s toll-free National Call Center; the ADA Web site; a monthly diabetic consumer magazine; outreach to communities most at risk for diabetes; and programs to help children with diabetes and their families. ADVOCACY The Association fights on behalf of the diabetes community to increase federal funding for diabetes research and programs, improve comprehensive health care and insurance coverage, and end discrimination against people with diabetes.
