A Fan-Operated Science Fiction and Fantasy Literary and Filk Convention in the Dallas/Fort Worth Area This is the permanent home for news stories and convention notes that are no longer 'front page' material but that are worth saving for posterity. For the latest news from FenCon, please always check the FenCon home page Thank you: Thank you, thank you, thank you! We can't say "thank you" enough to all the guests, dealers, volunteers, and of course the fen who made FenCon III our biggest and best convention yet. In a day or two we'll launch the FenCon IV site with wrap-ups from this past weekend, totals from the charity auction, and lots of photos. Yes, even the embarrassing ones of the webmaster deeply unconscious at the Dead Dog Party on Sunday night after closing ceremonies. FenCon IV: In case you missed the announcement (and haven't made it to the last page of your collectible souvenir program book), FenCon IV will be held September 21-23, 2007, with Guest of Honor Connie Willis, Music Guest Tom Smith, Artist Guest David Mattingly, Fen Guest Kathleen Sloan, and Special Guest Toni Weisskopf leading our third annual writers workshop. Plus a lot more, of course. Look for the FenCon IV website to launch here in a day or two then buy your membership. Lost and Found: Did you lose a guitar? We found one and it's pretty nice so we know the rightful owner wants it back. Contact us at info@fencon.org with a detailed description so we can arrange to return it. 2006 Short Story Contest Winners: Congratulations to the winners of our 2006
contest! Our readers and judges sorted through the overwhelming number of entries and after much
deliberation struggled to pick just three favorites. They are: Hungry?: The hotel restaurant, Zaya's, is offering all FenCon members a 15 percent discount when you show your badge. The breakfast buffet is a great way to start the day without hopping in a car. When you're ready to explore farther afield, a fine grouping of restaurants is just a bit west on I-635 at MacArthur. Lots of sit-down places, theme restaurants, fast food, and more. There are also plenty of restaurants on Forest Lane from Josey Lane east to Inwood Road. There's some fast food and a few decent places north of the hotel at Josey and Valley View. And the town of Addison is just a bit east on I-635 and has about 200 places to eat of every imaginable variety and price level.

Help spread the word: We've got all sorts of ways for you to tell your friends about FenCon: links, banners, buttons, flyers, and such. And now we've got one of those nifty userbars that are all the rage for sigfiles. Save it yourself or just link to this graphic. You'll find bios, pictures, and news about all of our other guests on the FenCon III guests page. Save SG-1: Yes, the Sci-Fi Channel cancelled it after 10 great seasons. Thank you, Austin: The FenCon party is home after a great weekend at Armadillocon 28 in Austin, Texas. We threw one of our patent-pending semi-legendary room parties on Saturday night from 9pm until just shy of 3am. It was great to meet new fen, catch up with old friends, hear James P. Hogan regale us with stories, and generally spread the word about FenCon III. We hope to see you there.
HOTEL UPDATE: Our convention hotel still has rooms, both King and Double, and if any reservations agent tells you otherwise, please politely get their name and let us know by e-mail right away. Honor and Glory: Our third annual Costume Contest, part of the legendary FenCon Cabaret on Saturday night, is looking for people with style, flair, and the guts to stand up in front of hundreds of cheering people and bask in their applause. Whether you're a costuming pro or a novice with a clever idea we have a category for you. Our exact rules are pretty simple (and coming soon) but if you made the costume or the costume maker is in attendance, your outfit is eligible for judging. If not, you can show it off and still feel the love from the crowd. We'll let you know here when we have all the details and the costume contest entry form ready to go. In the recent past: The deadline for entering the FenCon Short Fiction Contest was Saturday, July 15th and the early judging has begun. Lawrence Watt-Evans leads our 2006 FenCon Writers Workshop and all the seats in the workshop are filled as of July 12th. If you're interested in inquiring about the 2007 workshop, e-mail us at info@fencon.org. Welcome our latest guests: We're pleased to welcome what could be described as the world's best Celtic Filk Duo In Kilts, the Brobdingnagian Bards, to FenCon III. Read more about these guys and learn how to pronounce their name on our FenCon III guests page. Get your words out (and HURRY!): Send us your original, unpublished short story and we'll award some valuable prizes for the best of the best. (Cash is still valuable, right?) You only have until Saturday, July 15th, to submit your stories and there will be no deadline extension this year. The workshop is limited to 20 participants and as of July 12th, the workshop is full. If you're interested in getting on our waiting list for 2006 or inquiring about the 2007 workshop, e-mail us at info@fencon.org. What happens at Westercon...: The votes are in and Las Vegas has been chosen over Phoenix as the site for Westercon 61 to be held July 3-6, 2008. Visit the Burning Fan website for more information.
Calendar Update: The organizers of Ushicon, an Austin, Texas, anime convention for the last five years, have decided to shut down the convention and become a different sort of organization. Space limitations and other factors led to the shutdown and transformation. Read the whole story on their website.
We're not only sending people to enjoy the convention and meet you, the fen, but we're lending them our convention chairman as their Fan Guest of Honor. Our very own Tim Miller gets some hard-earned fannish love from our neighbors to the south. Be sure to say "hi" to Tim and his family, too.
Get your words out: Let the wonder fall on us because we want to read your original short stories and award some valuable prizes for the best of the best. (Cash is still valuable, right?) Find all the details and rules, updated for 2006, on the FenCon Short Fiction Contest page. Don't delay! You only have until July 15th to submit your stories and there will be no deadline extension this year.
Welcome our latest guests: We've just confirmed a whole bunch of new guests for FenCon III: David Lee Anderson, Charlee Jacob, A. Lee Martinez, Margaret Middleton, Tracy S. Meet the staff: There are just about 100 days until FenCon III begins so we're in final preparations for the convention. We had a big staff meeting at the hotel on Sunday and everything is on course for another great weekend. Our "sci-fi camp" theme is coming together and we're looking forward to seeing you in September. TODAY is the day: The price of a FenCon III membership increases today, June 1st. The price increase, which applies to both Regular and Friend of the Fen memberships, should have kicked in at midnight but your friendly webmaster is giving you a very (very) short extension. Buy your memberships now or pay more for them later. (And by "later" we mean anytime after about mid-afternoon.) Please, tell all of your friends! We (heart) Sci-Fi Channel: FenCon III Toastmaster Jim Butcher just let us know that the Sci-Fi Channel has picked up an additional 11 episodes of The Dresden Files, a series based on his Harry Dresden novels, in addition to the pilot. This full season of paranormal detective work begins January, 2007. (Yes, we're calling to see if we can get a sneak peek for the FenCon III Video Room.)
Come see our video (again): Thanks to your support Brand O Productions, a group that includes FenCon III chair Tim Miller, committee members Barry Whitewater and Ed Dravecky, and a couple of friends, got their digital video short through to the finals of the Dallas Video Association's 2006 24 Hour Video Race. Join us on Tuesday, May 23rd at the Angelika Film Center in Dallas as Calico competes for the top prize in the Guerilla category finals. It's just three bucks for an evening of fun and video. We could use your support (again). Come see our video: We are fans with many interests and one of these is digital video shorts. Brand O Productions, a group that includes FenCon III chair Tim Miller, committee members Barry Whitewater and Ed Dravecky, and a couple of friends, have an entry in the Dallas Video Association's 2006 24 Hour Video Race. The world premiere of Calico is Tuesday, May 16th, at 8pm at the Angelika Film Center in Dallas. It's only a couple of bucks for an evening of fun and video as they screen the first batch of entries. The evening starts at 6:30pm but our five-minute video is in the 8pm "Guerrilla" group. We could use your support. Membership has its privileges: But it has its costs, too. The price of a FenCon III membership increases on June 1st. This price increase applies to both Regular and Friend of the Fen memberships. Buy your membership now or pay more for them later. Please, tell your friends! Happy Mother's Day: Unless you're a clone or were grown in a beaker by a team of mad scientists, she's the one who gave you life and made it possible for you to roam our fair planet as a human being. Honor your mother on this special day with a phone call, a nice dinner, or perhaps a FenCon III membership. Mom would like that.
Nebulas awarded: SFWA, the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America Inc., announced the 2005 Nebula Awards at their annual banquet on Saturday, May 5th, and here are the winners:
One other award, the Andre Norton Award, was given to Valiant: A Modern Tale of Faerie by Holly Black for outstanding science fiction and fantasy for the young adult market. Congratulations to all of this year's winners and let's hear one more round of congratulations for FenCon III guest K.D. Wentworth for her nominated short story Born Again. U need a Carla U fix: She's talented, she's wonderful, and she's coming back to D/FW next week for a couple of concerts. Friend of FenCon Carla Ulbrich will be at a house concert at the home of FenCon audio gurus Gerry and Sandy Tyra in Fort Worth at 8pm on Friday, May 12th. She's nominated for her short story Born Again. The Nebula Awards banquet is Saturday, May 5th, from 7-9pm (Tempe, Arizona time). Good luck to K.D. and all the other finalists. We'll bring you a complete list of the winners. Guests in the news: The latest book in the Dresden Files series, Proven Guilty, by FenCon III toastmaster Jim Butcher is out in better bookstores across North America this week. Buy several copies. Look, up in the sky: Meet the folks from FenCon at CAPE2 this weekend as part of the Free Comic Book Day festivities. We'll have fliers, workshop applications, short ficton contest entry forms, and our own brand of hospitality. Hope to see you there.
It's important to support your local convention, wherever you live. So far in 2006 we've had to pull San Con XIII, originally scheduled for June 2006 in Pasadena, Texas, and Linucon 3 tentatively scheduled for October 2006 in Austin, Texas, off this convention listing. Both were cancelled because of failing attendance and difficulty staffing key positions. There's been no official word on Roc*Kon but with the June 2005 date skipped and the June 2006 date coming up fast with no sign of its return we've pulled them off the calendar, too. Welcome our latest guests: We've just confirmed two more brand new guests for FenCon III: fantasy author Elisabeth Fairchild and legendary music writer George Gimarc. Read more about these folks and more on our FenCon III guests page. The big blue marble: April 22: It's Earth Day so spend a few moments enjoying our home planet's nitrogen-oxygen atmosphere, standard gravity, and generally life-compatible levels of solar and cosmic radiation. Put on your thinking cap: Or whatever it is you wear to write fiction because we want to read your original short stories and award some valuable prizes for the best of the best. (Cash money is valuable, right?) All the details and rules, updated for 2006, can be found on the FenCon Short Fiction Contest page. Don't delay! You only have until July 15th to submit your stories and there will be no deadline extension this year.
Visit us in the blogosphere: Do you like reading about FenCon but wish you could comment on the news, share links with your friends, and get inside info we're not putting here on the FenCon website? Then you need to check out the FenCon LiveJournal! Yes, it's FenCon in a convenient blog format. Tell all of your friends and add us to your Friends list today. FenCon IV site update: We regret to inform you that the site selection plans for 2007 announced on April 1st (and archived below) have been put on hold as, per the Wright Amendment, travel to orbital space stations is restricted out of Love Field in Dallas. Please, write your member of Congress today. FenCon IV site chosen: We've got some exciting news to share, the kind we'd normally wait until FenCon III to tell you but we just can't wait. In partnership with our new pals at Virgin Galactic and the Russian Institute of Space Device Engineering, the Dallas Future Society proudly announces that FenCon IV will be held onboard the High Orbit Hilton.
Please note: Tang™ and space food sticks will be available in the consuite (thanks, Sivi!) but other meals and beverages are not included. Special guests will be announced soon. We hope you can join us as we "take fandom to the final frontier" in 2007. Shiny new faces: We've just confirmed five more guests for FenCon III including some folks or whom this will be their first FenCon. Don't miss your chance to hang out with writers Maggie Bonham, John Moore, Paul Black, Christopher Fulbright, plus legendary comics creator James O'Barr and all of our other guests. Read more about these folks and more on our FenCon III guests page. It was a bright and cheery day...: Put pen to paper or fingers to keyboard now because we want to read your original short fiction and hand out some nice prizes for the best of the best. All the details and rules, updated for 2006, can be found on the FenCon Short Fiction Contest page. Don't delay! You only have until July 15th to submit your stories and there will be no deadline extension this year. (Good luck!) The lucky folks with the last few tables are toy and games dealer A Piece of the Action Collectibles and "smart pop" and science fiction publisher BenBella Books both making return trips to FenCon. To ask about available space for 2007, contact us at dealers@fencon.org.
We (heart) Carla: FenCon I & II music guest Carla Ulbrich is bringing her offbeat sensibilities and hilarious songs to Dallas this week. Catch her (if you can) at Uncle Calvin's Coffeehouse on Friday, March 24th, at 8pm or Labyrinth Coffeehouse on Saturday, March 25th, at 7:30pm. Neither event is free nor are they connected to FenCon in any way. Check out their websites for all the details. Guests in the News: C.T. Wedel, Teresa Patterson, and Glenn Yeffeth are the latest such people to join us as guests at FenCon III. Read more about these folks and more on our FenCon III guests page.
Guests With Three Names Update: As the weather turns from winter to spring so do our thoughts turn to adding guests to FenCon III. Please welcome back returning guests Carole Nelson Douglas, Lillian Stewart Carl, Joy Marie Ledet, Generic Radio Workshop, and Ravenar. Ravenar makes this list because this staple of the FenCon Cabaret is really three lovely ladies: Linda Donahue, Julie Mandela, Kathy Turski. In other Guests With Three Names news, our pal and returning guest Angeline Hawkes-Craig is changing her professional name to simply Angeline Hawkes in the coming months. Read more about all of these folks and some with just two names (shocking!) on our FenCon III guests page. The final Nebula ballot is out: And FenCon III guest K.D. Wentworth is on it! She's nominated for her short story Born Again and the Nebula awards weekend is May 4-7 in Tempe, Arizona. Good luck to K.D. and all the other finalists. TODAY, no fooling: The price of a membership for FenCon III increases today, March 1st. This applies to both Regular and Friend of the Fen memberships. Buy your membership now or pay more for them tomorrow. (Please, tell your friends!) We loved ConDFW: Thanks to all the fen for making a cold and wet February weekend warm and inviting by hanging out with us at ConDFW V in Richardson, Texas!
