A Fan-Operated Science Fiction and Fantasy Literary and Filk Convention in the Dallas/Fort Worth Area

FenCon News and Notes Archive

This is the permanent home for news stories and convention notes that are no longer 'front page' material but that are worth saving for posterity. For the latest news from FenCon, please always check the FenCon home page

September 2006

Thank you: Thank you, thank you, thank you! We can't say "thank you" enough to all the guests, dealers, volunteers, and of course the fen who made FenCon III our biggest and best convention yet. In a day or two we'll launch the FenCon IV site with wrap-ups from this past weekend, totals from the charity auction, and lots of photos. Yes, even the embarrassing ones of the webmaster deeply unconscious at the Dead Dog Party on Sunday night after closing ceremonies.

FenCon IV: In case you missed the announcement (and haven't made it to the last page of your collectible souvenir program book), FenCon IV will be held September 21-23, 2007, with Guest of Honor Connie Willis, Music Guest Tom Smith, Artist Guest David Mattingly, Fen Guest Kathleen Sloan, and Special Guest Toni Weisskopf leading our third annual writers workshop. Plus a lot more, of course. Look for the FenCon IV website to launch here in a day or two then buy your membership.

Lost and Found: Did you lose a guitar? We found one and it's pretty nice so we know the rightful owner wants it back. Contact us at info@fencon.org with a detailed description so we can arrange to return it.

2006 Short Story Contest Winners: Congratulations to the winners of our 2006 contest! Our readers and judges sorted through the overwhelming number of entries and after much deliberation struggled to pick just three favorites. They are:

1st: "Double Edge" by Delilah Peeler
2nd: "All Things Green" by Mary Bowerman
3rd: "Love Me" by Becky Huffman

We thank all of the writers who participated for making our second annual contest such a success. We encourage everybody to enter our 2007 contest. (Look for details on the FenCon IV site.)

FenCon presents Sci-Fi Camp

Hungry?: The hotel restaurant, Zaya's, is offering all FenCon members a 15 percent discount when you show your badge. The breakfast buffet is a great way to start the day without hopping in a car. When you're ready to explore farther afield, a fine grouping of restaurants is just a bit west on I-635 at MacArthur. Lots of sit-down places, theme restaurants, fast food, and more. There are also plenty of restaurants on Forest Lane from Josey Lane east to Inwood Road. There's some fast food and a few decent places north of the hotel at Josey and Valley View. And the town of Addison is just a bit east on I-635 and has about 200 places to eat of every imaginable variety and price level.

August 2006

Let's Party: Want to throw a room party at FenCon III? We'd love to have you but we need to know two simple things: First, what is your hotel confirmation number? Second, what night will you be throwing the party? That's it. Just e-mail those two vital bits of info to hotel@fencon.org. This lets us keep the party noise away from folks trying to sleep so the parties can run later without problems with the hotel. Thank you!

Time is running out: Friday is your absolute last chance to buy a Friend of the Fen membership. We have to get the t-shirt order in so there will be no extensions and no exceptions. The price of a regular membership increases from $30 to $35 on Friday. Buy yours today!

Happy Mother's Day: Unless you're a clone or were grown in a beaker by a team of mad scientists, she's the one who gave you life and made it possible for you to roam our fair planet as a human being. Honor your mother on this special day with a phone call, a nice dinner, or perhaps a FenCon III membership. Mom would like that.

Get a room (soon): Our convention hotel room bloc for 2006 is still open at the great FenCon rate. Response has been so good that we've filled our initial room bloc (thank you, fen!) and the hotel has agreed to extend our rate to all FenCon members (thank you, Jennifer!).

FenCon III Flyer (390kb)

CONVENTION FLYER: updated 03 May 2006 - An updated and much cooler edition of our FenCon III convention flyer is now available for download (390kb) in a ready-to-print PDF version. Be sure to make copies for all of your friends.

It's important to support your local convention, wherever you live. So far in 2006 we've had to pull San Con XIII, originally scheduled for June 2006 in Pasadena, Texas, and Linucon 3 tentatively scheduled for October 2006 in Austin, Texas, off this convention listing. Both were cancelled because of failing attendance and difficulty staffing key positions. There's been no official word on Roc*Kon but with the June 2005 date skipped and the June 2006 date coming up fast with no sign of its return we've pulled them off the calendar, too.

April 2006

Welcome our latest guests: We've just confirmed two more brand new guests for FenCon III: fantasy author Elisabeth Fairchild and legendary music writer George Gimarc. Read more about these folks and more on our FenCon III guests page.

The big blue marble: April 22: It's Earth Day so spend a few moments enjoying our home planet's nitrogen-oxygen atmosphere, standard gravity, and generally life-compatible levels of solar and cosmic radiation.

Then you need to check out the FenCon LiveJournal! Yes, it's FenCon in a convenient blog format. Tell all of your friends and add us to your Friends list today.

FenCon IV site update: We regret to inform you that the site selection plans for 2007 announced on April 1st (and archived below) have been put on hold as, per the Wright Amendment, travel to orbital space stations is restricted out of Love Field in Dallas. Please, write your member of Congress today.

FenCon IV site chosen: We've got some exciting news to share, the kind we'd normally wait until FenCon III to tell you but we just can't wait. In partnership with our new pals at Virgin Galactic and the Russian Institute of Space Device Engineering, the Dallas Future Society proudly announces that FenCon IV will be held onboard the High Orbit Hilton.

This fantastic facility, set to be launched one year from today, will feature almost 180 guest compartments, a micro-G gymnasium, and free parking for personal shuttlecraft. This new facility will cause our membership price for 2007 to increase slightly. Regular Memberships purchased before the end of FenCon III will be $250,025 and Friend of the Fen Memberships will be $250,045. All memberships include transportation to and from the convention via the Southwest Regional Spaceport and accommodations for the weekend. Friends of the Fen also get a goodie bag, a special autograph session, and a personalized spacesuit.

Please note: Tang™ and space food sticks will be available in the consuite (thanks, Sivi!) but other meals and beverages are not included. Special guests will be announced soon. We hope you can join us as we "take fandom to the final frontier" in 2007.

Two More Dealers: FenCon III is about six months away and we've already completely sold out our dealers room. (Thanks!) To ask about available space for 2007, contact us at dealers@fencon.org.

The 2006 Hugo ballot is out: And FenCon II writers workshop instructor Mike Resnick is on it! He's nominated for "Down Memory Lane" in the Short Story category. Also on the ballot is FenCon III guest Brad Foster in the Fan Artist category. There's at least one future FenCon guest on the ballot, too, but we can't tell you who just yet. (It would spoil the surprise!) The Hugo Awards will be presented at L.A. Con IV, the 64th World Science Fiction Convention to be held August 23-27 in Anaheim, California. Good luck to Mike, Brad, and all of the other nominees.

Happy Thanksgiving

A Few Suggestions for Thanksgiving 2005:

  • Go to the parade.
  • Eat turkey until you're sleepy.
  • Watch the Cowboys beat the Broncos.
  • Help out at the local food bank.
  • Pass the potatoes.
  • Invite a friend to dinner.
  • Give thanks for all the things that make life interesting and wonderful.
  • Save room for pie.

From all of us at FenCon and the Dallas Future Society, here's hoping your Thanksgiving holiday is safe and warm and happy.

Guest Update: Several new names have been added to the FenCon III guest list recently. Five-time Hugo winning artist Brad W. Foster joing us for the first time while authors Shanna Swendson and Rhonda Eudaly appear for the second and third times, respectively. This will also be Julia Blackshear Kosatka's second appearance after a Category Five hurricane kept her away last year. (Darn that Rita!) We'll be adding more guests to our list soon. Join today!

It's an honor just to be nominated: Congratulations to our pal and recent FenCon guest Joe R. Lansdale on his 2005 World Fantasy Award nomination. Joe's Mad Dog Summer and Other Stories anthology was up for the Collection award. The awards ceremony was held at the 2005 World Fantasy Convention in Madison, Wisconsin, and the award in that category went to Margo Lanagan for Black Juice. Here's a complete list of the 2005 nominees and winners. Better luck next year, Joe!

MORE BREAKING NEWS: FenCon and the Dallas Future Society are overjoyed to announce that Darrell K. Sweet has agreed to be our Artist Guest of Honor at FenCon III. This Hugo-nominated legend has been painting book covers for some of the top authors in science fiction and fantasy for over 30 years. This comes just days after we confirmed that Alan Dean Foster has accepted the position of Guest of Honor for FenCon III in 2006. He's a prolific, best-selling author with dozens of novels and over 130 short stories in print. We're honored to bring them both to Dallas in September for all the Fen of North Texas and the Great Southwest. Tell your friends!

Why we love the Fen so darned much: In the wake of Hurricane Katrina we announced that the official charity of FenCon II would be the Salvation Army to aid their disaster relief efforts. The FenCon Charity Auction raised over $2800! Signed, limited-edition prints of our first two program book covers plus some cash donations raised nearly $700. That's a grand total of $3500! Wow. Thanks to everybody that made this fund-raising effort such a huge success.

FenCon's official charity for 2005 is The Salvation Army

Lost and Found: Did you lose something at FenCon II? Did you find something that belongs to a fellow fan? We've got a lost and found box full of items that need to be put back with their rightful owners and a few reports of missing items. If you can help us reunite the fen with their stuff, please let us know at info@fencon.org.

Thanks to the Fen!

2005 Short Story Contest Winners: Congratulations to the winners of our 2005 contest! Our readers and judges sorted through the overwhelming number of entries and after much deliberation struggled to pick just three favorites. They are:

1st: "Winds of Limbo Roar" by Michael Ashleigh Finn
2nd: "The Perils of Pet Ownership" by Aaron F. Johnson
3rd: "The Damned Kerchief" by Michael Ashleigh Finn

We thank all of the writers who participated for making our first contest such a success. We encourage you all to enter our 2006 contest. (Look for details coming soon on our website.)

It was (supposed to be) a dark and stormy night: Actually, we had sunny skies and unseasonably warm weather all weekend while the remnants of Hurricane Rita moved north and east of Dallas. Our friends in Houston and parts of south Texas were not as lucky. Thanks to everybody that made it to FenCon II and helped us grow our membership this year.
